Reverend Richard Brennan's A History of the Catholic Church or, Christ in His Church (1881) is an English adaptation of L.C. Businger's German work, carefully revised for students and general readers. Published by Benziger Brothers and enriched with a dedicated section on American Catholicism by historian John Gilmary Shea, the book presents Church history not as a mere chronicle of events but as the living continuation of Christ's redemptive mission. Brennan frames the Church as a divine institution whose entire history—from Pentecost to the 19th century—embodies Christ's perpetual presence among humanity, guiding souls toward salvation through doctrine, sacraments, and moral witness.
The work unfolds in two complementary parts: a sweeping narrative of the universal Church's development across continents and centuries, highlighting its civilizing influence and steadfast witness amid persecution and cultural change; and a focused account of
Catholicism's growth in America, documenting its struggles, institutions, and contributions to the young nation. Endorsed by prominent bishops including James Gibbons, the text was crafted to inspire reverence and love for the Church by revealing how Christ remains actively present within it—not as a distant memory but as a living spiritual force. Brennan insists that to study the Church's history is to encounter "the Man of Sorrows" Himself, making this volume both an educational resource and a call to deeper faith.
