These essays examine the relation of the Catholic Church to the civil power, from the pen of Dr. Joseph Hergenröther, Professor of Canon Law and Church History at the University of Würzburg and one of the most learned defenders of the Church in his day. Writing in the wake of the Syllabus of 1864 and the first Vatican Council, he meets the charges of the age - infallibility, the temporal sovereignty, civil allegiance, and the supposed hostility of the Church to the modern State - and sets forth the principles that make the Church a friend, not a foe, of the Christian State.

Known to English readers through his book Anti-Janus and conceived in connection with his History of the Christian Church, Hergenröther's work so answered the need of its time that a second edition was called for within a year of its first appearance. Translated from the German with the author's permission, this English edition (London: Burns and Oates, 1876) carries the argument from the teaching of the theologians and the declarations of the Popes through the mediaeval principles to the Syllabus and modern States - a manual of permanent value for the student of Church and State.
