Man With A Withered Hand

We picture Jesus this Sabbath Day
Going into the synagogue to teach—
Everyone gathered about Him,
Eager to hear the Messiah preach.

And there was a man with a withered hand,
Standing close by Jesus’ side—
The Pharisees were eager to see
If to their law, Our Lord would abide.

For they claimed that it was unlawful
For Jesus to heal on the Sabbath Day—
But Jesus, well knowing their thoughts,
Posed a question, in His gentle way.

Is it lawful on the Sabbath Day,
To do good or evil—save life or destroy it?
And telling the man to stretch forth his hand—
Jesus healed his infirmity that very minute.

Imagine the joy this man felt,
When Jesus gave his right hand this healing—
It is said there’s a lesson that we can learn
From the man’s right hand that had no feeling.

St. John Chrysostom helps us to see
That a man whose hand is useless and withered
Cannot put forth a helping hand—
For by its uselessness, a man is hindered.

So let’s gratefully keep our hands active
To help others in need of assistance—
For think of the joy that we can provide
Through such charitable acts of obedience!
