This authoritative four volume set presents the definitive life of St. Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori (1696-1787), one of the most influential Doctors of the Church and founder of the Redemptorists. Volume 1, covering his Vocation (1696-1732), traces his remarkable journey from early years.
Volume 1 Part A & Part B (Early Life & Vocation)
Volume 2 Part A & Part B (Golden Years & Struggles)
This section chronicles Alphonsus's profound transformation from a disillusioned lawyer to the founder of a religious order. Following the collapse of his marriage prospects and a professional breakdown in 1723, a spiritual vision leads him to abandon the legal bar for the priesthood, to which he is ordained in 1726. His early ministry is defined by fervent preaching, missions to the poor, and work at the Chinese College in Naples. His path eventually converges with Father Thomas Falcoia and the Redemptoristine nuns in Scala. Despite navigating significant ecclesiastical opposition and personal trials, he accepts this calling and, in November 1732, leaves Naples to establish the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
