Month of the Sacred Heart

The little volume entitled The Month of the Sacred Heart, here rendered into English by Rev. H. B. Hackey in the year of our Lord 1890, is a compact manual of daily piety whose pages breathe of the tender and penitential love of Jesus. Arranged for each day of the
month, its meditations are plain yet fervent, leading the reader from affectionate remembrance of our Lord’s wounds to practical acts of reparation and consecration; the prayers and litanies interspersed throughout afford the soul habitual recourse to the
Heart of Christ, and the whole work bears the mark of that French mysticism which St. Margaret Mary so luminously transmitted to the Church.

Though small in compass, the book aims at solid formation rather than novel speculation: brief reflections, repeated acts of devotion, and clear directions for Communion and examen fit it for household use and parish instruction alike. The translator’s style preserves the gravity and simplicity proper to such manuals, so that the reader who opens it in June — the month traditionally given to the Sacred Heart — will find a steady, consoling companion for seeking divine mercy,  renewing love, and practicing the little sacrifices by which the Christian life is sanctified.
