Political Economy

Edmund J. Burke’s Political Economy offers an introduction to the principles governing wealth, production, money, banking, international trade, taxation, and wages. Originally prepared for students in Catholic colleges, high schools, and academies, this early twentieth-century textbook reflects the economic theories and public-policy debates of its time, providing readers with insight into how economics was understood and taught over a century ago.

For those drawn to the Catholic intellectual tradition, the book provides a historical perspective on the study of economic life within Catholic education. Its examination of commerce, labor, financial institutions, and government policy invites consideration of questions concerning moral responsibility, the use of wealth, and the common good. It is particularly relevant to readers exploring the intersection of economic thought, social philosophy, and the history of Catholic schooling.

An appealing choice for Catholic libraries, historical book collections, educators, and students of economic history, Political Economy preserves an important part of an earlier educational tradition. Burke’s work offers an opportunity to examine the ideas that shaped economic discussions in his era and to consider their relevance to broader conversations about society and human welfare. Its historical arguments should be understood in the context of the period rather than assumed to represent contemporary Catholic social teaching.
