This is no modern abridgment or diluted retelling-this is the
authentic, unvarnished life as compiled in the heat of the
beatification cause (ca. 1850s-1860s), when Blessed John
Berchmans was still hailed as the "Angel of the Novitiate"
among the undivided Society of Jesus. Father Boero, S.J., a
Roman hagiographer of impeccable orthodoxy, drew directly
from the Acta et Decreta of the Sacred Congregation of Rites,
eyewitness testimonies from Mechelen and the Roman
College, and the saint's own spiritual notes in Flemish and
Latin. The French translation (from the Italian original)
preserves the fervent, rhetorical style of Counter-Reformation
piety-full of Latin tags, invocations to the Guardian Angels,
and exhortations to perpetual chastity-before the liturgical
simplifications of later decades.
